Lift Experts LTR Assist in Modernisation of Historic BMA House
An historic London building is being brought up to date for the 21st
century, with a little help from Leicestershire-based lift experts LTR Lifts
and Escalators.
Main contractors Wallis, part of Kier South East, began work
in April 2007 on a 12-month modernisation of BMA House in Tavistock Square,
London, the headquarters of the British Medical Association, which includes
creating a new 290-seat conference hall, an 88-seat Council Chamber and new
café and
restaurant facilities. Completion is due on 15 May 2008.
Following a tendering process, Wallis commissioned Hinckley-based
LTR Lifts and Escalators to install a 3,000 kg hydraulic lift, serving three
floors, two disabled platform lifts – one in the BMA House library
and one in the new cafe – and a disabled platform stair lift. Work
on the installation began at the end of November and is due for completion
early in 2008.
BMA House, a Grade II listed building whose oldest part was
designed in 1911 by the influential architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, has been home
to the BMA since 1923. The modernisation will provide high quality facilities
for the BMA and organisations hiring the facilities, for conferences and
other events, and reinstate some of Lutyens’ original designs, such
as a covered colonnade walkway for the building’s courtyard.
Alan Dunkley, managing director of LTR, said: “We are
delighted to be playing a small part in a new chapter in the life of BMA House.
“The specifications were quite challenging technically,
so it was pleasing to have secured the contract ahead of larger competitors.
Our lifts installation will also achieve compliance with the Disability Discrimination
Act, making this historic building accessible to all.”
Andy Lee, site manager for Wallis, said: “This is an unusual
job, as it is rare to modernise an historic building in the heart of London
in this way. LTR are working closely with us to meet completion dates and
bring their contribution to this project to a successful conclusion.”
