Garden Centre Keeps Visitors on the Move with LTR Escalators
Visitors to a leading garden centre in the north of England can take it a
little easier on their shopping trips there, thanks to Leicestershire-based
LTR Lifts and Escalators.
The Klondyke Group, who own the Klondyke Garden Centres Ltd and William Strikes
Ltd chain of garden centres, which has 23 branches across the north of England,
Scotland and Wales, commissioned LTR to supply and install two glass escalators
at its Houghton Hall Garden Centre, near Carlisle, the largest centre in the
group.
When Houghton Hall opened in April 2006, it had stairs leading up to its mezzanine
floor, plus a platform lift for disabled access. However the group chairman
decided that installing escalators would improve comfort and convenience for
visitors to the striking venue, which offers farm foods, coffee shop, gifts
and ‘A World in Miniature’ Museum alongside traditional plants
and garden items.
LTR were awarded the project after tendering against big name competitors
and carried out installation of the escalators – supplied by leading
Chinese manufacturer BLT under an exclusive deal with LTR – on schedule,
with completion at the end of February.
The escalators were delivered after closing time but all other assembly and
installation work took place during the garden centre’s opening hours,
behind screens and with careful attention to health and safety issues, to minimise
disruption to the retail business.
Chris Mackie, the in-house architect for the group, said: “From delivery
of the escalators to final commissioning, the process took three weeks, which
was right on schedule. Throughout, we found our relationship with LTR to be
both amicable and constructive.”
Alan Dunkley, LTR managing director, said: “It is always pleasing when
a new client commissions us for a project, because it is a real vote of confidence
in our experience and service as well as our competitive pricing. We are delighted
to have worked so well with the Houghton Hall team and that the project has
reached a successful conclusion.”
