Lift Experts Celebrate Birmingham Landmark’s New Lease of Life
Shoppers will soon be visiting a Birmingham city centre landmark store once
again, following a major facelift involving Leicestershire-based experts LTR
Lifts and Escalators.
For many years, the Corporation Street building was home to a popular branch
of C&A and it continued to attract shoppers as a Beatties store after C&A
closed in 2000.
Beatties shut in January 2006 and the building underwent a major conversion
in 2007. It will soon become home to branches of JJB Sports, Mothercare and
New Look, with Mothercare the first store to open on 6 March.
The multi-storey building is owned by C&A’s property arm, Redevco,
which commissioned London and Sheffield-based contractors Woolf to carry out
the conversion. It included demolishing the existing façade and replacing
it with an impressive new frontage in Portland stone and internal structural
alterations.
Hinckley-based LTR was selected through a tough competitive tendering exercise,
which included big name competitors from the lift and escalator sector, to
refurbish three lifts and install two new lifts and four escalators.
Alan Dunkley, managing director at LTR, said: “We are delighted to have
been involved in this project. The building’s long history means that
it is fondly remembered by many people and we are pleased to be playing a part
in bringing it back to life. The new lifts and escalators will give many years
of service to shoppers and improve accessibility throughout the store.”
Keith Dean, Woolf project manager, said: “LTR followed up a competitive
tender by meeting every deadline, from documentation to material delivery to
on site dates, which has contributed greatly to the smooth running of our construction
programme. Our collaboration has proved very successful.”
