Lift Experts Help To Give City Store New Lease of Life
A Birmingham city centre landmark store is coming back to life, with a little
help from Leicestershire-based LTR Lifts and Escalators.
The former C&A store on Corporation Street shut in 2000 and later became
a branch of Beatties, which closed in January 2006. It is now undergoing a
major conversion to become home to branches of JJB Sports, Mothercare and New
Look.
The multi-storey building is owned by C&A’s property arm, Redevco,
which has commissioned London and Sheffield-based contractors Woolf to carry
out the project. It includes demolishing the existing façade and replacing
it with an impressive new frontage in Portland stone and internal structural
alterations.
Hinckley-based LTR was selected through a tough competitive tendering exercise,
which included big name competitors from the lift and escalator sector, to
refurbish three lifts and install two new lifts and four escalators. Work began
in August and the whole conversion project is due for completion in early December,
with the stores likely to open early in 2008.
Alan Dunkley, managing director at LTR, said: “We are delighted to have
been involved in this project. The building’s history means that it is
fondly remembered by many people and we are pleased to be playing a part in
bringing it back to life. The new lifts and escalators will give many years
of service to customers and improve accessibility throughout the store.”
Keith Dean, Woolf project manager, said: “LTR have followed up a competitive
tender by meeting every deadline, from documentation to material delivery to
on site dates, which has contributed greatly to the smooth running of our construction
programme. Our collaboration has proved very successful.”
